Overview #
Hostfully Guidebooks is an excellent tool for providing guests with recommendations. However, when you need to segment these recommendations by different locations, there’s no native categorization feature available. This guide explains our custom solution for organizing Guidebook recommendations by location using hidden tags.
The Challenge #
Property managers with listings in multiple areas often want to show location-specific recommendations to guests. By default, Hostfully Guidebooks displays all recommendations together without location filtering capabilities.
Our Solution #
We’ve developed a simple tagging system that uses the Long Description field (also known as “What else would you like to tell your guests?”) to create location identifiers. These tags are then processed by our website integration to organize and filter recommendations appropriately.
Step-by-Step Instructions #
1. Add Location Tags to Your Recommendations #
For each recommendation in your Hostfully Guidebook:
- Navigate to the recommendation you want to tag
- Go to the “Long Description” field (or “What Else Do You Want Your Guest To Know” field)
- At the end of your existing description, add a location tag in this format:
[Location Name]
For example:[Catskills]
- Repeat this process for all recommendations, using consistent location names

2. Hide the Tags from Guests (Optional) #
To prevent these tags from being visible to guests when browsing the guidebook:
- Select the tag text including the asterisks and brackets
- Change the text color to white
- This will make the tags invisible to guests while preserving them in the HTML for our system to process
Important Notes #
- Be consistent with your location names to ensure proper grouping
- Always include the square brackets as shown:
[Location Name]
- You can add multiple location tags to a single recommendation if it applies to more than one area
- These tags will not affect how recommendations appear within the native Hostfully interface
