# Maps show a gray box or error

The maps on your website show a gray box or an error instead of loading. This usually happens after a domain change or a new site launch.

**Why this happens.** Google Maps requires an API key that is authorized for the exact domain your site runs on. A key created for your old domain, or by a previous provider, stops working when your site moves to a new domain.
