# Track API keys: creating a Server Key

HomeRunner connects to Track with a Track **Server Key**. A **Channel Key** has the same shape but cannot read your units, which causes a **401 Unauthorized** error on the first sync.

**Creating the Server Key in Track.**

1. Click the gear icon (**Configuration**) in the top right.
2. Open **Company Setup**, then **API Keys**.
3. Click **+ Server Key**.
4. Name it HomeRunner and save.
5. Copy both the **Key** and the **Secret** while you are still on that screen.

If you do not see a **Server Key** option, ask your Track account manager to enable it.

**Entering the key in HomeRunner.** In the HomeRunner Dashboard, enter the Key as **API Key**, the Secret as **API Secret**, and your Track address plus /api as the **Base URL**, for example [https://yourcompany.trackhs.com/api](https://yourcompany.trackhs.com/api).
